How do I open a UDF file? Three methods on a computer

If a UDF file won't open with a double-click, the reason is simple: your computer has no program that recognizes this format. You have three options; which one to choose depends on whether you'll edit the document or only read it.

To convert right away: select your file and download it in seconds. No sign-up, no software to install.

Method 1: Open it with the UYAP editor

This is the right option if you'll edit the document and upload it back to UYAP. Once the Ministry of Justice's editor is installed, the .udf extension is associated with this program and the file opens with a double-click.

Installing the editor requires administrator rights and may need the Java runtime environment. This step isn't always possible on corporate computers; in that case, use the methods below.

Method 2: Convert it to Word

This option requires no software installation, works in your browser, and gives you an editable document. The same tool also works in reverse, so you can convert a petition you prepared in Word for uploading to UYAP.

  1. Open the UDF ↔ Word converter page.
  2. Select your file or drag and drop it; the system detects the extension automatically.
  3. When the conversion is done, download the .docx file.
  4. Open it with Word, LibreOffice, or any office app on your phone.

Method 3: Convert it to PDF

If you only want to read, print, or attach the document somewhere, PDF is the better choice: the appearance is preserved exactly and it opens the same way on every device.

If you won't be editing, choose PDF; if you change your mind later, you can also convert the same document to Word.

What to check if it won't open

  • The file may have been only partially downloaded; check its size and download it again.
  • Some email clients change the extension. Make sure the file name really ends with ".udf".
  • If it's inside a compressed folder, extract it first.
  • If the document is electronically signed, the signature file may come separately; only the .udf file is needed for conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to install software to open a UDF file?
No. If you only want to read or print it, converting the document to Word or PDF in your browser is enough. Installing software is necessary if you'll edit the document and upload it back to UYAP.
Can the file I convert be uploaded to UYAP?
When you convert your Word file to UDF, the resulting file is prepared for uploading to UYAP. It's a good idea to open it in the editor and check the final version before uploading.
Are my files stored on the server?
Once the conversion is complete, your file is prepared for download; it is not stored for any purpose other than the conversion.
